Super Hornets on track for delivery to RAAF

THE first components of the RAAF's new Super Hornet aircraft have been assembled in the US, with the first of 24 aircraft on track for delivery late in 2009.

Manufacturer Boeing said the production process had started but the first Australian aircraft would not begin to take shape as fighter planes until mid-2008.

"The program for Australia is on track,'' said Bob Gower, Boeing vice-president for the Super Hornet program.

"We have cut the first chips for the platforms at some of the machine shops.

"Being on track normally doesn't end up being newsworthy. We wish it was. We would be in the news a lot more.''
