F/A-18A through D model fighter aicraft have to be inspected for stress cracks on a hinge connecting the aileron to the flaps on the back side of the wings, after a crack was discovered during a routine flight inspection. Failure of the hinge could "result in loss of (the) aileron, possible further damage to the aircraft, or possible loss of the aircraft," according to the Navy.
US Navy and Marine Corps Hornets will be inspected within the next couple of weeks, but Navy officials said there are no immediate plans to ground the 636 planes in question. According to the Navy, 112 Hornets are deployed on carriers worldwide.
Inspectors have already found 15 aircraft with the problem, after inspections began last Thursday. A panel on the wing can be swapped out with a new one to get rid of the problem.
