Navy Unmanned jet program moved from Wright-Patterson

DAYTON, Ohio - The military has decided to close an Air Force-Navy program that develops land-based, unmanned combat jets at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, a newspaper reported Thursday.

The decision by the Defense Department reflects a shift in priorities to developing unmanned attack jets based on aircraft carriers, the Dayton Daily News said.

The Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems Program will close during the 2006 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, a representative for Navy Capt. Ralph Alderson, the program’s director, told the newspaper.

The program, which had been located at Wright-Pat since November, no longer will be a joint-military operation. It will be shifted to the Navy and moved to the Patuxent Naval Air Station, Md.
