Airborne laser aims for 2008 shoot-down

The Airborne Laser (ABL) program is on track to produce an aircraft that can shoot down a just-fired enemy missile with a laser, provided that budget cuts don't shoot down ABL first.

That is the essence of the message, and the warning, presented by senior-level advocates of ABL, speaking to defense journalists in Washington.

As of now, ABL is making good progress toward the major milestone of being able to "shoot down a boosting ballistic missile," a goal the program will reach in 2008, according to Air Force Col. John Daniels, director of the Airborne Laser (ABL) system program office within the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
